How to Get First-Year Students to Flock to Your Career Center

During the past year, through a combination of innovation, persistence, and execution, the UCLA Career Center was able to see a 50% increase in first-year students coming into the Career Center. Through an informative presentation and discussion, we want to share our secrets so that you too can have that kind of success. This program will review the strategic initiatives that we implemented over the course of one year inspiring you to brainstorm what will work on your campus. A focus on the importance of efficiency, effectiveness, and enthusiasm will leave attendees feeling motivated and confident about generating a steady stream of first year students flocking to their career centers.

Goals of Presentation:

-To review successful tactics, strategies, and approaches that the UCLA Career Center has utilized to see a 50% increase in first year students coming into the Career Center

-To rejuvenate the enthusiasm of Career Center professionals in regards to inspiring first year students to take advantage of their wonderful services

-To discuss the ever-increasing importance of attracting first year students to your Career Center

-To help Career Center professionals brainstorm ideas regarding attracting, marketing, and relating to first year students

Presenter Information:
Jordan Maness, M.Ed.
Counseling Manager, Student Engagement
UCLA Career Center

Jordan Maness joined the UCLA Career Center as a full time Career Counselor in Fall 2004. Maness was promoted to Counseling Manager in the Spring of 2008 shortly after completing the UCLA Student Affairs Management Leadership Group Program. Maness possesses a diverse and dynamic working background with experience in communications, the creative arts, and business. At the Career Center, he enjoys galvanizing team efforts to engage entering students (First-year, Transfer, and Graduate students), counseling students of all majors, presenting workshops, supervising the peer advisors, creating career-related videos, and contributing to other areas as needed. Maness completed his M.Ed. in Counseling in Student Affairs at UCLA. He also holds a B.S. in Journalism and Mass Communication and a B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Colorado-graduating cum laude. Maness enjoys surfing and snowboarding and is originally from Denver.
